Hel is the goddess of the dead in Norse mythology. She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and the sister of Fenrir and Jörmungand. In the pre-Christian ancestral Norse beliefs, Hel is one of the hypostases of Freyja the Great Mother Goddess, the name hel (helja) means: to welcome, to hide, because Freyja is also the goddess of death who welcomes half of the warriors destined for Valhalla. She is also a warrior goddess1.

The Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson writes in the Saga of the Ynglingar that the legendary king of Sweden, Dyggve, became her husband after her death.

Hel is comparable to Persephone, Hecate, but also to Melinoe in Greek mythology.
