Tyr Bindrune, Embroidery Beanie
In Norse mythology, Týr (generic name for god in Old Norse1) is the god of the sky, of just war, of justice, of victory and of strategy2. Tyr is a major god of the Aesir, common to all Germanic peoples, and we know several regional variants of his name; in Gotic Teiws, in Old High German Ziu3, in Old English Tīw or Tīg4, from the proto-Germanic *TīwazNote 2. He is initially a sovereign god who embodies in particular the juridical aspect of sovereignty. Associated with the legislative assembly of the thing, he is also a god of oaths, procedures5 and law6.Týr is undoubtedly a very ancient god, originally at the head of the Germanic pantheon6. His role and his cult would have lost importance in favour of Odin and Thor from the time of the barbarian invasions7. Preserved Norse myths evoking him are few, but his importance is confirmed by the fact that his name gave the name of the day of the week Tuesday in Germanic languagesNote 3. He is symbolized by the rune Tīwaz ↑, the rune of victory8.According to Norse texts, Týr is either the son of OdinNote 4 or that of the giant HymirNote 5. Týr showed his heroic worth by sacrificing his hand in the mouth of the wolf Fenrir to gain his trust and chain him. He is then known as the one-armed god. During the prophetic battle of Ragnarök, Týr and Garm, the guardian dog of the world of the dead, will kill each other.
